League of Legends esports team takes 2nd in state tourney

Rabbit Hole, the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts’ League of Legends esports team, placed second in the state after tournament play on Dec. 14. Their finish marked the conclusion of a good fall overall for all of ASMSA esports teams.

Rabbit Hole is comprised of starters Jonathan Tucker, Tristan Henson, Gage Carr, Andrew Nguyen and Lane De Foor with Ty Carmichael, Quede Martin and Daniel Lee serving as subs. The team is coached by Chris Martinez, a lead technology specialist in ASMSA’s Information Technology department. They played against Fort Smith Southside in the tournament finals.

At the end of the regular season, Rabbit Hole was ranked No. 2 in AAA rankings. Overall, ASMSA had eight teams compete in six recognized esports games — League of Legends, Mario Kart Team, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros., Splatoon and Overwatch. Seven of the teams finished the regular season ranked by in the AAA, Arkansas Regional, or youth club rankings.

Other teams who competed this season include:

  • Wheels of Fortune: Jimi Frazier, Rydia Titus, Evan Fowlkes, Ivy Monroe and Iris Morris. No. 10 AA ranking in Mario Kart, finished in the state tournament Elite 8;
  • Charizzma: Jayden Patel, James Mathis and Braccen Jacy. No. 28 AAA ranking in Rocket League, competed in the first round of the state tournament;
  • Dog Water: Geoffery Williams, Haven Herring and Eli Gregory. Alex Hernandez served as a sub. Competed in Rocket League competition;
  • The Little Dudes: Braden Haley, Daniel Nkunga and Grayson Jackson. Andrew Nguyen served as a sub. No. 10 AAA ranking in Super Smash Bros., finished in the state tournament Elite 8;
  • The Big Men: Thor Seay, Hiro Linker and Jack Russenberger. Michael Schranz served as a sub. No. 34 AAA ranking in Super Smash Bros., made it to the round of 32 in the state tournament.
  • I’m Inking: Andrew Le, Ty Carmichael, Ivy Monroe, Quade Martin and Kira Burnett. No. 4 Arkansas Regional ranking in Splatoon, made it to Final 4 of state tournament; and
  • Support Carry: Gagg Carr, Lyla Hill, Brent Orlina, Jonathan Tucker and Jameil Modica. Quade Martin, Kira Burnett and Thor Seay served as subs. No. 3 ranking in youth club in Overwatch, made it to the Final 4 of the state tourney.
