Computing Services

It is the philosophy of ASMSA to provide student-centered learning opportunities and to promote critical thinking skills in a technologically-enhanced environment.

Whether it be using the latest technology in the classroom as a learning tool, or accessing the Internet via the school's computer network from somewhere on campus, the ASMSA community embraces technology in its daily life.

ASMSA has the highest per student broadband allocation for any school in the state.  Gigabit wireless internet is available across campus. Though content filters are in place, students are able to access social media, online gaming, and streaming services.  ASMSA recognizes that campus is both a place to live and learn. Fun fact: nearly half of our weekly broadband usage goes to YouTube, Netflix, Steam, Xbox Live, Instagram, and Snapchat.

The IT suite is located on the first floor of the Creativity and Innovation Complex.

Several students also work with the computer network as their Work Service job, and are available to help as problems arise.

Computer Use Policy

Rules and regulations for using the ASMSA computer network can be found on this page.  Further information regarding the Acceptable Use in available in the Student Handbook.

Personal Computers

Students are welcome to bring mobile phones, laptops, or desktop computers to campus as well as a variety of other personal technology such as tablet, e-readers, video game consoles, or streaming media devices that may access the campus network. ASMSA offers private Internet access in student rooms at no charge. To see basic specs for personal computers to be used for academic purposes at ASMSA, read the ASMSA Computer Requirements.

Recreational use of personal computers should not interfere with academics. If nonacademic use of a computer is deemed to be interfering with an ASMSA student's success, such use may be restricted.  As part of the campus wellness plan, Internet access is disabled after midnight in order to promote a climate that values sleep and rest.

Email

Every student, staff, and faculty member is provided with a ASMSA Google Apps for Education account.  This accounts provides access to email, calendar, Drive, and a suite of other web-based productivity tools.  Accounts are activated only for the period of time a student is enrolled at ASMSA and are disabled after graduation.

These accounts can be accessed from http://email.asmsa.org.

Accessing the network

To access the Internet in your dorm room through ASMSA's network, you must first have your own personal device.  ASMSA is a "one-to-one BYOD (bring your own device campus)."  Technology is increasingly personalized and mobile.  The majority of ASMSA students bring a personal laptop computer to campus.  ASMSA discourages the use of Chromebooks due to programs and applications used in some courses that are not compatible with the device.  Low-income students who are unable to afford a laptop will be issued an ASMSA during their period of enrollment.   In the event that your device needs repair, various computer labs and laptop carts are available on campus for short-term use.

It is strongly recommended that you have some sort of virus and spyware protection installed on your computer. If one machine on the network gets infected, it can cause the entire network to go down.

Students are asked not to use file sharing programs on their computers connected to the school's network. The large amount of data transfer from one machine slows down the network for the entire campus.
