ASMSA students earn recognition at FBLA district conference

Seventeen students at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts earned recognition at the 2021 Future Business Leaders of America District IV Spring Conference.

The competition and conference were held virtually on Feb. 15. The events were judged by using an objective subject test, a performance/presentation, or a combination of an objective test and a performance component.

Students who earned recognition in the district competition will be eligible to compete in the state competition that will be held virtually March 29-30. Students earning district recognition include:

  • Stacia Toney, a junior from Eudora, second place, Business Communication;
  • Chenyeng Vang, a junior from Lincoln, first place, E-Business;
  • The team of seniors Yug Shah of Marion, HarLeigh Smith of Altus, and Amanda Smothers of Pottsville, first place, Entrepreneurship;
  • Jacob Holmes, a senior from Rector, first place, Future Business Leader;
  • Abby Berger, a junior from Jonesboro, first place, Healthcare Administration;
  • Talana Small, a sophomore from White Hall, first place, Introduction to Financial Math;
  • Impromptu Speaking - Bryson Austin, a senior from Little Rock, second place, Impromptu Speaking;
  • Blake Smith, a junior from London, second place, Job Interview;
  • Jaysee Magby, a junior from Foreman, fifth place, Journalism;
  • Mary Mashburn, a junior from Crossett, second place, Organizational Leadership;
  • Pierce Hickey, a junior from Sherwood, first place, Personal Finance; and
  • Arindam Deb, a junior from White Hall, first place; Political Science.

Three other events in which ASMSA students participated are held at the state conference. They automatically qualified for the state competition. They are David “Trey” Clark, a junior from Harrison, in Coding and Programming; David “Bear” Moore, a junior from Hampton, in Help Desk; and Mason Duren, a junior from Keiser, in Computer Game and Simulation.

At the state conference, the competitors will attempt to qualify to compete at FBLA Nationals, which was to be in Anaheim, Calif., this summer, but will now take place virtually.Two students served as officers for District IV. They were HarLeigh Smith, a senior from Altus, as  District IV FBLA Vice President for 2020-2021 and Jacob Holmes, a senior from Rector, as District IV FBLA Parliamentarian for 2020-2021. Blake Smith, a junior from London, is running to serve as the District IV FBLA President for 2021-2022.
