6 student artists earn awards at state competition

Six student artists from the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts recently won awards in the Arts Across Arkansas competition.

Arts Across Arkansas is a mentorship and professional development program that aims to encourage, enhance and expand students’ original thoughts, processes, personal experiences and artistic abilities, according to the program’s website. It is sponsored by the Arkansas Arts Council, an agency of the Division of Arkansas Heritage.

Students who earned recognition also received a cash prize — $1,000 for first place and $500 for second place. ASMSA students who received awards include:

Music Composition

  1. Alex Back
  2. Grace Adams

Film

  1. Calen Long

Visual Arts

  1. Gwen Oliver
  2. Olivia Busby

This was the second year that the competition was held. Categories also included Literary Arts, Dance Choreography, and Photography. Thirteen ASMSA students qualified for the finals. The competition finals and awards ceremony were held at the Westwind School for Performing Arts in Maumelle.
