ASMSA students earn honors at district FBLA conference

Twenty-three Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts students qualified for state competition during the recent Arkansas Future Business Leaders of America District IV Spring Conference.

Students competed in several categories during the spring conference held at the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope on Feb. 23. ASMSA sent 29 students to compete in various categories at the conference. The events included objective subject tests or a combination of an objective test and a performance component.

Students who finished in the top five of their district competition qualified to compete at the state conference that will be held April 4-5 in Little Rock. ASMSA students who qualified for the state competition at the district conference include:
• Jared Harris, a junior from Fayetteville, second place, Agribusiness;
• Joseph Filipek, a junior from Bismarck, second place, Business Calculations;
• Cali Keck, a junior from Marion, and Megan Tustison, a junior from Carlisle, second place, Business Ethics;
• Gracie Musgrove, a junior from Dover; Kennedy Reynolds, a senior from Conway; and Hannah Turnbo, a junior from Marion, third place, Graphic Design;
• Maddy New, a senior from Cabot, first place, Healthcare Administration;
• Kason Brewington, a senior from Conway; John Redding, a senior from Roland; and Monish Shukla, a senior from White Hall, second place, Hospitality Management;
• Joseph Davidson, a junior from Ozark, first place, Impromptu Speaking;
• Briston Yarbrough, a junior from Danville, first place, Insurance and Risk Management;
• Jason Ly, a junior from Jonesboro, fourth place, Job Interview;
• Michelle Smith, a senior from Little Rock, fourth place, Public Speaking II; and
• Kat Allen, a junior from Texarkana; Morgan Dillon, a junior from Marion; and Michael Gipson, a junior from Coal Hill, third place, Web Site Design.

Rebecca Parham, a junior from Alma, finished in sixth place in the Business Communication event at the district competition but did not qualify for state.

Several students competed in events that automatically qualify for the state competition. They are:
• Hanah Carr, a senior from Haskell; Rex Hearn, a senior from Bryant; and Paul Lee, a senior from Gosnell, 3D Animation;
• Leyton Gassaway, a senior from Paragould, Client Service; and
• Paige Green, a junior from Alma, Sales Presentation.

Students competing at the state conference will have the opportunity to qualify for the national competition, which will be held in Atlanta this summer.

Lynn Duong, a junior from Fort Smith, was elected to serve as District IV treasurer for 2016-17. Carr was elected as District IV vice president last year and served in that role during this year’s spring conference.
